Meet Milica Paunic

My name is Milica and I'm currently a second-year medical student at the University of Toronto. I've been a part of the Clinical Trials Navigator (CTN) program for nearly three years. I joined the program in January 2022, while I was a second-year undergraduate student at the University of Windsor completing a degree in Biological Sciences. My involvement in CTN has been one of the most significant and rewarding aspects of my academic and professional journey.

One of my first projects with CTN was developing 122 cancer-specific intake surveys. These surveys were important in building the RedCap tools we now use to collect patient information, which helps us tailor clinical trial searches to individual needs.

During the summer of 2022, I worked as a Clinical Trials Navigator, where I was responsible for conducting weekly clinical trial searches for patients. I also analyzed the search engines we relied on, such as ClinicalTrials.Gov, QCROC, and CanadianCancerTrials, to identify barriers to finding appropriate trials. The findings from this analysis were presented at several conferences, and we’ve submitted a manuscript highlighting the major challenges in the clinical trial search process.

More recently, I’ve been involved in expanding the CTN program to other pilot sites. This has included creating and implementing pre- and post-implementation surveys, conducting stakeholder interviews, and coding these interviews for qualitative analysis. The goal is to gather insights that will help us refine the program as it grows.

In addition to these projects, I also help manage our social media presence, working with the team to plan content and create graphics that communicate our work and connect with our audience.

My work with CTN has been an important part of my personal and professional development, being one of the reasons I was inspired to pursue medicine after seeing just how impactful it was. I hope everyone gets to be a part of a team as amazing as this one!
